Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Birth registration is a critical step in securing legal identity, accessing social services, and protecting children's rights. However, in many rural areas, including Dikwa Local Government Area in Borno State, birth registration rates remain low due to cultural, logistical, and awareness challenges. Radio programs, as a widely accessible medium, have proven effective in raising awareness about developmental issues in underserved communities (Abdullahi & Yusuf, 2024). These programs leverage local languages, relatable narratives, and repetitive messaging to educate communities on the importance and processes of birth registration. This study explores how radio programs in Dikwa influence knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors surrounding birth registration.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite national and international efforts to improve birth registration rates, many children in Dikwa remain undocumented. This lack of documentation hinders access to education, healthcare, and legal protection, leaving children vulnerable to exploitation. While radio programs are employed to disseminate information, their effectiveness in encouraging birth registration in Dikwa is under-researched. Limited literacy levels, cultural misconceptions, and inconsistent program delivery further exacerbate the issue (Garba & Hassan, 2025). This study seeks to address these gaps by evaluating the impact of radio programs on awareness and participation in birth registration efforts.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypotheses
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for policymakers, media practitioners, and child advocacy organizations. By examining the role of radio in promoting birth registration, it provides insights into effective communication strategies for increasing registration rates in rural areas. The findings will inform the design of targeted radio campaigns and contribute to broader efforts to achieve universal birth registration in Nigeria.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on radio programs aired in Dikwa Local Government Area, Borno State, and their impact on birth registration. It examines community awareness, program content, and challenges in promoting registration.
